Ex-Orlando, NYCFC, RSL boss Jason Kreis joins Inter Miami's technical staff

Jason Kreis is making a return to MLS, taking up a role in the technical department with 2020 expansion side Inter Miami CF, the club announced on Wednesday.

Kreis won’t be Inter’s first head coach, however; that selection is still yet to be made.

“At this time, we’re not going to name coaching positions, but he will not be the head coach of Inter Miami,” Miami sporting director Paul McDonough, told The Athletic’s Paul Tenorio, who broke the news. “Right now, Jason will be involved in everything we are doing on the technical side of the club, from scouting players for all levels of the club to training ground construction, and we’ll use his experiences to help us as we continue to grow.”

The former Orlando City SC, New York City FC and Real Salt Lake boss has not been on the sidelines since the Lions dismissed him during a lengthy losing skid last summer.

In the near term he’ll have a more general role with Inter, though it appears that he would become a top contender for Miami’s planned USL team, which the club hope to launch in future years out of the training facility project they proposed for the site of Ft. Lauderdale’s Lockhart Stadium this week.

Kreis led RSL on an underdog run to the 2009 MLS Cup title and subsequently built the Utah side into a perennial trophy contender before departing to become the first head coach in NYCFC history. He lasted only one season in the Bronx as the Cityzens struggled mightily in their debut campaign.

“Right now, Jason can be involved in a lot of things, but as we get closer, I see him as a coach and look forward to seeing him on the field again,” McDonough told Tenorio.
