Portland Timbers 1, FC Dallas 0 | 2019 MLS Match Recap

PORFernandez vs. DAL 6/30/19

Brian Fernandez set an MLS record when he scored a goal in his fifth consecutive league match to start a career, and the Portland Timbers held on for a 1-0 win over FC Dallas Sunday night at Providence Park.

The Timbers played just their third MLS game at home this season.

FC Dallas had multiple quality chances to draw even in the second half, the best of those in the 75th minute. But Jesus Ferreira's wide open shot from inside the box sailed high over the net.

Portland's defense was hard at work in the second half but helped goalkeeper Steve Clark earn his second clean sheet of the season. Clark made two saves.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: The Timbers are closer to the bottom of the Western Conference standings but might be primed for a run. Still, road trips to New York City FC and Seattle plus a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal at LAFC are three of their next five matches. FC Dallas has just one league match between July 4 and 20, with upcoming friendlies against Xolos de Tijuana of Mexico and Spain's Sevilla FC at Toyota Stadium.

  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Ferreira's miss was a major lost opportunity, but the run-up to Fernandez's goal featured three key split-second moments -- the cross from Sebastian Blanco and the decisions by Diego Chara and Jorge Moreira to let the ball go through to Fernandez rather than get a foot on it.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: It's Fernandez, who has brought a scorer's mentality to the Rose City. He has six goals on the season to lead the Timbers. Portland had a few more chances later but made the most of one, which was all they needed.
