Atlanta United clinch 2018 playoff spot with DC United's draw at NYCFC

Atlanta United players celebrate a Josef Martinez goal — July 28, 2018

Atlanta United FC have something to celebrate on their weekend off, as they clinched a spot in the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs on Saturday thanks to D.C. United's 1-1 draw at New York City FC.

The Five Stripes needed D.C. to drop points in their trip to Yankee Stadium, and were almost forced to wait another week until David Villa's late free kick rescued a point for NYCFC following Steve Birnbaum's headed goal for the visitors.

Atlanta are the second team to clinch a playoff spot this year, following the New York Red Bulls, who clinched last weekend.

Both Atlanta and the Red Bulls will now turn their attentions to the Supporters' Shield race – and securing a top-two spot in the Eastern Conference, which would allow them to avoid a Knockout Round match. Atlanta are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 15 when they head west to face the Colorado Rapids (3:30 pm ET | UniMás, Twitter - full TV & streaming info).
