D.C. United's planned Buzzard Point stadium project has taken a major step forward with the awarding of a contract to New York-based contractor Turner Construction Co.
The Washington Business Journalreported last week that United had awarded the contract to Turner, which has worked on a number of soccer-specific stadiums and other sports venues.
Turner is expected to start construction later this year on the 19,000-seat stadium, designed by Kansas City, Mo.-based Populous, with the goal of United opening the 2018 season in their new home.
Demolition and site preparation began in April, the first physical signs of United's long-sought move away from aging RFK Stadium, the team's only home.
