With Major League Soccer games suspended for 30 days due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the LA Galaxy currently aren’t scheduled to play until April 11 at Minnesota United.
But when games do return, club president Chris Klein knows the new schedule could prompt quick turnarounds. A bigger roster could be particularly useful, Klein said, with LA light on central defenders and up top.
“We know that we’re going to need a full roster,” Klein said in a recent LA Times story. “You have to look and build those players and it does change your thinking a bit.”
While the Galaxy currently have a five-week break in between games, Klein understands the need to put matters on pause as the public-health situation unfolds. Aside from games being temporarily suspended, MLS also instituted a three-day training pause for first teams, reserve teams and academies. They could return Monday, starting what’s essentially a second preseason.
“There is a much bigger issue going on in the world, which is most important,” Klein said. “But people need a release and like to talk about sports. So yeah, we are certainly looking at ways that we can do that.”
Once the Galaxy return to game action, Klein said they could scrimmage Galaxy II, their USL Championship side. It's all a work in progress, he said.
“The prevailing thought is we need to do what’s best for the health and safety of our players and our fans and our people,” Klein said. “We’re using that as a guide."
