Ex-Atlanta defender Leandro Gonzalez Pirez scores second goal in two games for Xolos

Leandro Gonzalez Pirez - Atlanta United - head up

Former Atlanta United center back Leandro Gonzalez Pirez can’t stop scoring.

The Argentine, who moved to Liga MX side Club Tijuana this past offseason, scored Xolos’ opener for the second straight game. This time, Gonzalez Pirez bundled home a flicked-on header at the back post in the 36th minute of their 3-2 win over Pachuca on Friday.

The game also saw incoming FC Dallas forward Franco Jara score twice for Pachuca, including once via a penalty kick. Jara signed a pre-contract this past January and will become a Designated Player for FC Dallas upon the Secondary Transfer Window opening in July.

Gonzalez Pirez, 28, previously scored last Tuesday in Club Tijuana’s 4-3 win over Toluca in Copa MX play. That tally included a tribute to injured former teammate Josef Martinez, who tore his ACL in Atlanta’s 2020 season-opening win at expansion club Nashville SC

During his three years with the Five Stripes, Gonzalez Pirez started 95 games, scored three goals and dished out six assists. He helped the club win MLS Cup, the U.S. Open Cup and Campeones Cup.
