What did MLS goalkeepers wear in the 1990s? Lots and lots of bright colors, for starters

As part of MLS Jersey Week presented by adidas, the folks at Classic Football Shirts have unearthed photos of some of the most memorable 'keeper jerseys from 1990s MLS, when the league was first finding its footing.

While it's hard to say there was a particular theme, this much held true across the board. With bold and colorful designs and pattern, there was very little risk of confusing the goalie with a field player. Check them out:

3. LA Galaxy: Jorge Campos

Campos is known as being the first major foreign star to be signed by the MLS in 1996 and wore some great shirts. We think this orange design is one of the best. The heavy Nike material is synonymous with 90s MLS and we wish we'd seen it more in Europe pic.twitter.com/XKYfUQNT2f

NY/NJ Metrostars: Tony Meola

This Nike jersey was worn by a few different Nike teams in the MLS but we were drawn to this green version worn here by USA 94 goalkeeper Tony Meola. There's something very MLS 90s about a two tone neck collar and cuffs and we approve. pic.twitter.com/zDPYxSbLKV

Columbus Crew: Brad Friedel

The lack of branding on the Colombus Crew goalkeeper jersey went a step further with no club logos apparent on Brad Friedel's jersey in 1996. This Adidas template was rolled out on a bigger scale for a lot of teams in 1996 and became all-time classic. pic.twitter.com/yvqYqRxoyD

San Jose Clash: Joe Cannon

When Cannon transferred to The Clash for the 99 MLS season the side already had two goalkeepers on the roster. With the number 1 taken, Cannon decided to take the unusual squad number choice of 0. The Nike jersey is obviously great too. pic.twitter.com/bAeLDrdDJ5
