Decision Day

MLS playoff predictions: Here's which teams will grab the final spots, according to FiveThirtyEight

As we head into Decision Day presented by AT&T, the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoff picture has become a bit clearer.

With the New England Revolution’s2-0 win over New York City FC, the Revs booked their berth, while also eliminating the Montreal Impact, Columbus Crew SC and Chicago Fire.

There are now two spots left, both in the West, with four teams still alive.

Who has the best odds of reaching the postseason? According to the latest predictions by FiveThirtyEight, the Portland Timbers have an 85 percent chance of making the playoffs. The Timbers are in sixth place, two points above the playoff line heading into a Decision Day clash with the San Jose Earthquakes Sunday (4 pm ET | ESPN, MLS LIVE on DAZN in Canada) at Providence Park.

The Quakes, one point below the playoff line, have a 31 percent chance of reaching the postseason, according to FiveThirtyEight.

After squandering a chance to clinch Sunday with a 3-0 loss to the Colorado Rapids, FC Dallas are still in a strong position to book their spot, with FiveThirtyEight putting their chances at a whopping 84 percent ahead of their final regular season game against already-eliminated Sporting Kansas City Sunday (4 pm ET | MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in US, on DAZN in Canada) at Toyota Stadium.

The Rapids, who face a Supporters’ Shield-winning LAFC team with Carlos Vela one goal from setting a new MLS regular season record, have a less than one percent chance of making the playoffs, according to FiveThirtyEight.
