2019 Season Preview: Philadelphia Union

It's a new system in Philadelphia with a new face of the franchise ... as Mexico international Marco Fabian prepares for his Union debut.

The Union passed their way to a club-record point total, but are undergoing a full tactical transformation in 2019. Philly are looking to press high up the field in a 4-4-2 diamond rather than relying on patient possession in a 4-3-3.

Team strengths and weaknesses

  • Strength: They've committed to a club philosophy: Trust the kids, build from within and make sure that today's hard lessons lead to a more successful tomorrow.
  • Weakness: Philly are undergoing a tactical overhaul this offseason, changing from a possession-heavy 4-2-3-1 team to a high-pressing 4-4-2 diamond side. This may end up being a strength in the long run, but expect to see a learning curve.
