Earthquakes convince Almeyda to shift training schedule to watch Super Bowl

San Jose Earthquakes head coach Matias Almeyda

They'd just set up camp at a luxury resort in sun-splashed Cancun, on Mexico's tropical Yucatan Peninsula. But the San Jose Earthquakes had a problem.

When new head coach Matias Almeyda distributed a packed schedule of preseason workouts and training sessions, his players noticed that this week's rest day fell on Saturday, as related by ESPNFC's Tom Marshall. Thing is, one of the biggest events on the United States' sporting and cultural landscape fell on the following day: Super Bowl Sunday.

After some discussion among the squad, it was decided that veterans Chris Wondolowski and Shea Salinas would approach Almeyda to make a special request.
