FIFA 19 Ultimate Team launch: 3 MLS starter squads to build

Josef Martinez All-Star practice with Miguel Almiron

With a new edition of EA Sports FIFA 19 comes a new edition of Ultimate Team. The beginning of the year is fun as everyone starts with a clean slate, and the teams used are unique. For a quick start, look no further than MLS.

For the uninformed, a starter squad is a cheap team to build at the beginning of the game. Without many coins, here are three attainable MLS starter squads.

Top players

Some of the top-rated players

These are most of the top-rated players in MLS according to FIFA, minus one Zlatan Ibrahimovic because he'll be too expensive to fit under the criteria of a starter squad.

The front three isn't the fastest but is heavy on quality. Carlos Vela, David Villa and Ignacio Piatti are three of the league's deadliest attackers and fit well together in a 4-3-3. The midfield is attack-minded but can control a game with possession. The backline is strong, with a pair of midseason additions topping their positions.

Pace!

Some of the fastest players

For players who like to play in transition, this is the team for you. The 'slowest' midfielder is Tyler Adams, a player that is more fleet of foot than almost every other defensive midfielder in the game and routinely covers more ground than just about anyone.

Alphonso Davies, Miguel Almiron and Tito Villalba are nightmares to defenders in space while Darwin Quintero and Josef Martinez blend pace with ruthless finishing ability.

When stretched, the backline will be able to cover space with Alvas Powell, Ike Opara and Kemar Lawrence all being the fastest in the league at their positions.

A balanced squad

The balance of this side is what tips it. It has pace and quality; attack and defense; creators and finishers; possession players and prime counter-attacking players.

Leandro Gonzalez Pirez and Opara are arguably the best MLS defensive pairing, ready to deal with fast attackers. Saphir Taider and Michael Bradley both are well-rounded players that can hold the shape of a team in the midfield, opening freedom for the attacking quartet.

The best part of the team, Martinez, Sebastian Giovinco, Almiron and Kaku balance each other well. The four players are interchangeable, all can beat a defender one-on-one and find the back of the net.
