HOW ACQUIRED: Traded from San Jose Earthquakes before the start of the 2013 season. Signed a new contract with Sporting KC ahead of the 2017 season. Signed a new contract through 2019 with an option for 2020 on Feb. 27, 2018.


Injuries had prevented Opara from logging more than 16 starts for Sporting KC until 2017. Making 30 starts last season though, he became a standout defender on a reliably solid backline. Named Defender of the Year and to the Best XI in 2017, the Wake Forest product earned his first call up to the national team in 2018.

INTERNATIONAL: Started all three matches at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt. Invited to camp with the US Olympic squad (U-23) in February 2012. Featured in 2018 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

COLLEGE: Played three seasons at Wake Forest before declaring for the 2010 SuperDraft. Two-time ACC defensive player of the year. Two-time All-American, and MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist in 2008.
