Heading into Campeones Cup, how have Toronto fared against Mexican teams?

2018 Concacaf Champions League - CCL - Chivas vs Toronto FC - Jozy Altidore

Heading into the Campeones Cup on Wednesday (8:15 pm ET | Univision, ESPN2, TSN, TVA Sports) as Toronto FC face Liga MX side Tigres UANL, let's take a look back at how TFC have fared against Mexican teams.

In the simplest terms, Toronto have a 4-6-4 record against opposition from Liga MX. Nearly half of those games came in 2018 alone, when Toronto faced three Mexican teams during their run to the Concacaf Champions League final.  After beating the Colorado Rapids in the round of 16, TFC played Liga MX sides in each of the final three rounds.

In the quarterfinals, they advanced over Tigres 4-4 on aggregate by virtue of away goals while winning the first leg at home. They then faced AmƩrica in the semifinals and won 4-2 over two legs, again taking care of business at BMO Field. In the final, they lost to Guadalajara 2-1 at home in the first leg then won 2-1 in Mexico before losing in penalties that evening.

TFC played a handful of friendlies against Mexican teams ahead of the season. They beat Tijuana and Cruz Azul but lost to AmƩrica.

Reaching back in the past, in the 2012-13 Concacaf Champions League, Toronto lost twice to Santos Laguna in the group stage. In the 2011-12 edition, they drew and lost to UNAM in the group stage but qualified for the knockout rounds.

There, they were stomped out of the competition in the semifinals by Santos by an aggregate score of 7-3. Joao Plata scored twice in the series.
