Toronto FC mutually agree to part ways with center back Damien Perquis

Toronto FC late Tuesday announced that the club and center back Damien Perquis have mutually agreed to terminate the defender’s contract.

“After speaking with Damien, we have agreed to allow him to pursue other opportunities,” Toronto FC GM Tim Bezbatchenko said in a club statement. “On behalf of Toronto FC we would like to thank Damien for his contributions to the club and wish him and his family all the best in the future.”

The 32-year-old former Polish international signed with Toronto FC on January 26, 2015. He made a total of 37 regular season appearances over two seasons, scoring two goals and helping Toronto FC to their first-ever MLS playoff berth last year. He only played one match in Amway Canadian Championship competition -- the 2015 semifinal second leg against Montreal.

The departure of the experienced Perquis, which also opens up an international roster spot, leaves Toronto FC with five center backs on the roster: MLS veteran and regular starter Drew Moor, versatile 6-foot-2 defender Josh Williams and 23-year-olds Eriq Zavaleta and Nick Hagglund. The left-footed Clement Simonin, a No. 9 overall pick in the 2015 SuperDraft, has made just two league appearances in two seasons.
