The 2016 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup first round gets underway on Wednesday, with 46 teams from American soccer’s lower divisions set to face off in 23 matches.
The winners of Wednesday’s contests will advance to face USL teams in the second round. MLS clubs will enter the competition in the fourth round, while NASL sides will begin their tournament participation in the third round.
Wednesday’s first round will be contested by a mixture of local qualifiers, PDL clubs and NPSL clubs. Three MLS organizations will be involved via their Under-23 PDL teams: the New York Red Bulls U-23s (at New York Pancyprian Freedoms), the Portland Timbers U-23s (vs. La Maquina of California) and Seattle Sounders U-23s (vs. Outbreak Soccer of California).
Unlike the fully professional USL teams that are owned or operated by American MLS clubs and barred from the competition, the U-23 PDL sides are amateur teams and are thus allowed to participate in the Open Cup.
