DC United’s 3-0 win over Chivas USA Saturday night came with a cost, as midfielder Chris Pontius suffered a non-displaced fracture of the tibia on his right ankle, according to the team’s website.
After assisting on all three of Charlie Davies’ goals on the evening, Pontius was injured in a second-half collision with Chivas center back David Junior Lopes. He was transferred to the hospital immediately, where X-Rays confirmed the break.
According to a team spokesman, there were no new updates on Sunday afternoon of Pontius’ condition or how much time he might miss.
However, with only six weeks left in DC’s season, the injury could mean Pontius will watch the rest of 2011 from the sidelines.
Pontius is the only member of the team to have played in all 25 of DC’s game on the year, which was turning into his best as a pro. He’s second on the team in goals and first in assists, with seven and five, respectively.
Two weeks ago, Pontius was called into U.S. men’s national team camp out in California.
