Orlando City SC 1, Chicago Fire 2 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

Chicago Fire veteran Alan Gordon scored the game-winner Saturday in a 2-1 victory over Orlando City SC.

Aleksandar Katai opened up scoring with a skillfully-curled free kick past goalkeeper Joe Bendik. Gordon subbed in at halftime for forward Nemanja Nikolic with the teams locked in a 1-1 stalemate, and 40 minutes later, "Gordo" did what he does best: scored the late game-wining goal, which erased a first-half equalizer from Orlando midfielder Cristian Higuita.

The win snaps a two-game skid for Chicago, while the ebbs and flows of the MLS season have run dry for the home side: After hitting a six-game winning streak, the Lions are now winless in their last three games.

Goalkeepers played a huge role in the match. Bendik put together a solid performance, while Patrick McLain had a standout debut for Chicago between the posts. McLain recorded five saves and helped hold off the Lions, even after Mo Adams was sent off in the 89th minute.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: This could be a turning point for the Chicago Fire, whose season has not had the greatest start. Shot-stopper McLain proved his worth in his Fire debut. Chicago close out their short road trip next week in Philadelphia before returning home to face the struggling San Jose Earthquakes.

  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH:
Alan Gordon only does big moments. Gordo scored a scorching hot 30-yard golazo to secure a Fire win — he is officially Chicago's closer.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Despite Gordon's golazo, this honor goes to a guy that played a standout 90 minutes in net for Chicago. Patrick McLain made just his third start in Major League Soccer Saturday, his first minutes since October 2016.
