MLS Disciplinary Committee slaps Houston Dynamo DP Boniek Garcia with one-game suspension

Boniek Garcia

NEW YORK – A reckless challenge from Boniek Garcia may have gone unpunished during the run of play last weekend, but it hasn’t escaped the eye of the MLS Disciplinary Committee.

The Houston Dynamo Designated Player was issued a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine on Friday for his tackle on Chicago Fire winger Patrick Nyarko in the 75th minute of the teams’ 1-1 draw on Sunday at Toyota Park.

Garcia – who was deemed to have endangered the safety of his opponent with the tackle – will serve the suspension Sept. 14 when the Dynamo play against Philadelphia Union, after he returns from international duty with the Honduran national team.

The committee also determined that Real Salt Lake and the Portland Timbers violated the league’s mass confrontation policy during their Aug. 30 game. This is Real Salt Lake’s second offense, and therefore the club and head coach Jason Kreis have been fined.

The Portland Timbers are subject to fines for subsequent violations.
