Despite typical challenges, MLS has found some CCL success in El Salvador

There's no such thing as an easy away day in the CONCACAF Champions League.

That said, El Salvador has been a more hospitable destination than most for visiting MLS teams over the history of the competition since it launched in the fall of 2008.

The Seattle Sounders' visit to Santa Tecla on Thursday night (10 pm ET |, will mark the 16th time an MLS side has paid visit to a Salvadoran foe. In their previous 15 matches, the visitors have a more-than-respectable 8-2-5 record.

Isidro Metapan is the only Salvadoran side to beat MLS opponents home or away in the competition, thwarting the Houston Dynamo 3-2 at home in the 2009-10 tournament, and then thumping the LA Galaxy 4-0 – also at home – in 2013-14 group play. Of the latter match, it should be noted the Galaxy had already clinched a quarterfinal spot.

The Sounders themselves drew 1-1 at Metapan in their only CCL visit to El Salvador in 2010. That result helped them secure a 2-1 aggregate victory in their qualifying series and reach the group phase.

Santa Tecla is in only its second CCL. They drew their previous home match against an MLS opponent, 0-0 against Real Salt Lake in the 2015-16 group stage.
