DC United sign Ghanaian international, World Cup vet Samuel Inkoom to shore up midfield and defense

D.C. United signing Samuel Inkoom

With the MLS regular season in the homestretch, the MLS Cup playoffs coming up and CONCACAF Champions League play to worry about, D.C. United have added a player with considerable experience.

On Friday, the club announced the signing of free agent Ghanaian midfielder/defender Samuel Inkoom, who is available for immediate selection. Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are pleased to be adding an experienced player in Samuel who will provide us solid depth at the wide midfield and outside back positions,” said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper in a statement. “We welcome Samuel to the D.C. United family.”

The 25-year-old Inkoom has been a part of the last two Ghana World Cup rosters, starting two games in the knockout stage in 2010, including a round of 16 win against the United States in Rustenburg, South Africa.

A professional since 2007, Inkoom started his career in his native Ghana before moving on to Swiss powerhouse FC Basel in 2009. In 2011, he played for Ukrainian side FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, then went on loan in 2013 to France's SC Bastia, and to Greek side Platanias FC earlier this year.

Inkoom has played nearly all of his career to date at right back.
