City of Portland honors Timbers by proclaiming "2015 MLS Champion Portland Timbers Soccer City USA Day" | SIDELINE

MLS Cup - 2015 - Merritt Paulson

The 2016 preseason is just days away, but that doesn’t mean they’re done celebrating the Timbers 2015 MLS Cup championship in Portland.

Portland proclaimed Wednesday, Jan. 20 as “2015 MLS Champion Portland Timbers Soccer City USA Day” during a city council meeting. The honor comes on top of the Timbers raucous MLS Cup celebration parade and rally at Providence Park following the club’s MLS Cup win at Columbus in December.

“Obviously it was a good year for the city of Portland and the state of Oregon, and it shows the power of sports and the light we can shine on a community,” Timbers owner Merritt Paulson told media. “[Sports can] really be a unifying force in bringing people together, so it’s terrific, it’s a terrific celebration.”

The Timbers will report for preseason camp on Saturday.
