Chicago Fire continue to build 2015 attack with signing of new Designated Player David Accam

The Chicago Fire finished near the bottom of the league with just 41 goals in 2014. It seems their 2015 resolution is to avoid repeating that feat.

To that end, on Friday the club announced their second new Designated Player signing of the offseason as they picked up Ghanaian striker David Accam from Helsingborgs IF in Sweden. Accam joins Nigerian forward Kennedy Igboananike, signed earlier this month, as offseason reinforcements for the Fire.

Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“David is an exciting, creative player with a goal-scoring mentality,” said Fire Head Coach and Director of Soccer Frank Yallop in a statement. “I’m pleased that David will be joining the Fire. He’s a key piece as we continue to build a deep squad in preparation for the 2015 season and we’re looking forward to having him on our team.”

Accam, 24, started his career with the Right to Dream Academy in his home nation's capitol of Accra before moving to Europe, where he's spent the last six years. He worked his way up from tiny Ledbury Town in England all the way to Helsingborg in the Swedish top flight by 2012. Over two seasons with The Reds, he scored 30 goals in 62 appearances.

“I’ve had an amazing journey in soccer so far, and I’m thankful to everyone and every club that has helped me along the way – Right to Dream, Hartpury College, Nike Academy, Ostersund and Helsingborgs. I know that Chicago is going to be a great home for me, and I’m looking forward to giving everything I have to become part of the Fire family, with my teammates, the club staff and of course, the fans, especially Section 8.”

Accam received his first international call-up for the Ghana's FIFA World Cup Qualifying match against Sudan on March 24, 2013 and was a part of the 18-man roster for the match.

Chicago suddenly have a crowded stable of forwards, with the two new signings joining 2013 MLS MVP Mike Magee and last year's top scorer, Quincy Amarikwa in the mix.
