Jermain Defoe’s magical start to his MLS career has now also made him the top performer of Week 3, according to the Castrol Index.
Defoe scored the winning goal in Toronto FC’s 1-0 victory against D.C. United on Saturday, following up on his brace from their season-opening 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders a week ago.
Players from the defensive side made up the next three spots in the rankings: defender Ike Opara (No. 2), who led Sporting Kansas City to a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over San Jose; Vancouver Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted, who made three saves in their 0-0 draw with the New England Revolution; and Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei, who made five saves in their 2-0 win over Montreal Impact.
D.C. 'keeper Bill Hamid also cracked the top 10, coming in at 10th after making five saves.
Attackers rounded out the rest of the top 10. Colorado Rapids forward Deshorn Brown (No. 5) scored a goal and came up with a handful of dangerous chances in a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers, while New York Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty came in at fifth after his goal led to a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire.
