Christian Pulisic, Chelsea book Champions League spot as Premier League season ends

The 2019-20 Premier League season wrapped up Sunday, and Champions League soccer awaits US men’s national team midfielder Christian Pulisic.

Pulisic and the Blues secured fourth place after a 2-0 win against Wolves, guaranteeing an automatic spot in Europe’s top competition. Signed last offseason from Borussia Dortmund for $73 million, Pulisic finished his first league season at Chelsea with nine goals and six assists in 25 matches. He also factored into the second Chelsea goal, driving play forward before Olivier Giroud doubled their lead.

More could await Pulisic, since Chelsea will face Arsenal in the FA Cup final Aug. 1. They’ll also play the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 series with Bayern Munich on Aug. 8, with the German champions holding a 3-0 aggregate lead.

Although he didn’t come off the bench during Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw against West Ham, USYNT forward Indiana Vassilev is staying up. His side’s result, combined with Watford and Bournemouth finishing on 34 points, ensured they’d get 17th place and avoid relegation. Vassilev signed a new contract with Aston Villa in May and featured in four matches off the bench in 2019-20.

Former Atlanta United star Miguel Almiron also saw his full Premier League season come to a close, with Newcastle United finishing in 13th place after a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool. The Paraguayan midfielder was subbed off in the 70th minute, while USMNT outside back DeAndre Yedlin stayed on the bench.

Almiron, who originally joined Newcastle last January, had four goals and two assists through 35 matches this season. He also scored four times in the FA Cup, and Yedlin appeared in 16 games during his fourth campaign with The Magpies.
