US men’s national team midfielder Duane Holmes took to Twitter on Wednesday to address one of the negative reactions to the Black Lives Matter movement.
While some have responded to the call for the need to value Black lives and recognize the injustice they continue to face by stating that “All Lives Matter,” the Derby County midfielder explained through a series of analogies why it is misplaced. Put simply, he said it’s about highlighting one group that needs support instead of putting others down.
“It’s not an either/or proclamation,” the 25-year-old Georgia native wrote. “When there is a crisis we have always rallied around that particular group. It doesn’t discredit or diminish any other group, it just brings awareness and support to the group that needs attention.”
The message, naturally, drew plenty of social media attention. Holmes has also voiced his perspective on Instagram as Derby’s season resumed in late June.
Holmes, who’s earned two USMNT caps, has appeared in 34 matches across all competitions this season, scoring and assisting four times each.
