It may soon be a case of brothers reunited at D.C. United via a blockbuster deal.

Steven Goff of The Washington Post reported Wednesday that the Black-and-Red are exploring bringing Juventus and Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain to the club. Thatā€™d link the superstar with his older brother, Federico Higuain, who signed with D.C. last March as a player and Player Development Coach after spending eight seasons with the Columbus Crew.

Goff outlined that such pursuits are still in the early stages, so Higuainā€™s potential move to Audi Field doesnā€™t seem imminent. Thereā€™s also the looming context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is bound to impact the global transfer market and revenue streams.

Higuain, 32, is currently under contract with Juventus through June 2021, so any move prior to that would require a transfer fee or the Serie A powerhouse being willing to mutually part ways. Should it come together, itā€™d resemble when D.C. made a splash in 2018 to acquire English superstar Wayne Rooney before the opening of their soccer-specific stadium.

The No. 9 currently has 63 goals and 16 assists in 139 matches for Juventus, with previous stops at Real Madrid, Napoli, AC Milan, Chelsea and River Plate. On the international stage, Higuain ranks sixth in all-time goals for Argentina with 31 finishes in 75 appearances.

In mid-April, links between Higuain and the LA Galaxy also surfaced due to connections with head coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto. Other superstars have been linked to D.C. over the past year, with midfielders Mesut Ozil and Luka Modric both surfacing as possibilities.
