Federico Higuain signs with DC United as player, Player Development Coach

TRANSFER TRACKER: Signing

Federico Higuain is back in MLS, with D.C. United announcing Monday that the veteran playmaker has joined the club as a player and Player Development Coach.

Higuain, 35, was out of contract following the 2019 season after having featured for Columbus Crew SC since 2012. He missed most of last season with an ACL injury that was sustained in late May, though returns for a unique role for the Black-and-Red.

“Federico has consistently been one of the best attacking players in the league since 2012," said D.C. GM and VP of soccer operations Dave Kasper in a statement. "He has been a consistent goalscorer and creator on the field and we are looking forward to incorporating his MLS experience to bolster our roster this season."

Since joining Columbus in 2012 from Club Atletico Colon in his native Argentina, Higuain has recorded 55 goals and recorded 63 assists. He’s one of only 21 players in MLS history to join the 50-goal, 50-assist club.

Higuain represents yet another attacking addition for D.C. this year, with Julian Gressel, Edison Flores, Yamil Asad, Erik Sorga and others joining the fold. Last year, the Black-and-Red scored just 42 goals during their run to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. Those scoring woes were compounded by the club losing Wayne Rooney and Luciano Acosta this past offseason.
