Seattle Sounders FC 2, Chicago Fire FC 1 | 2020 MLS Match Recap

After a disappointing Concacaf Champions League loss at CenturyLink Field on Thursday, the Seattle Sounders were looking to put on a show in front of their home crowd on Sunday. The newly re-branded Chicago Fire FC gave Seattle a serious run for their money, but the reigning MLS Cup Champions won 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Sounders pressured Chicago early and Miguel Ibarra twice came close to taking an early lead, but Chicago goalkeeper Kenneth Kronholm came up big to keep Seattle off the board. On the other end of the pitch, Chicago had not one, but two goals waved off due to offside calls. After the first 45 minutes, the game remained scoreless.

The Fire hoped to take advantage of a tired Sounders squad and finally got their chance seconds into the second half. Alvaro Medran sent a ball in to Djordje Mihailovic from 40-plus yards out, who then laid it off to Robert Beric. Beric went near-post on Frei and found the back of the net for his first MLS goal.

About 10 minutes later, Seattle thought they had leveled things up on a combination play between Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan, but yet another goal was called back, this time because Morris was narrowly offside. In the 62nd minute, the roles were reversed and Roldan played a ball into Morris, who made sure that his goal counted.

With six minutes of stoppage, there was plenty of time for more action in this game, and the two connected again. Roldan flicked a header across the goal mouth off a corner and Morris was in perfect position to get the brace.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: For Seattle, a disappointing CCL loss just days ago left fans wondering how their first MLS game would go. On the other hand, Chicago debuted a new owner, new brand and a new coaching staff and put up a good fight against the MLS Cup champs. Both teams had something to prove and what we saw was that Seattle can still perform in a double-game week and all of the offseason changes may have improved Chicago for the better.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Morris didn't start this match due to his CCL playing time, but the forward scored the late winner to get all three points.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Again, Morris came in at halftime and scored a brace, lifting the Sounders to a win.
