Sporting Kansas City 0, FC Dallas 2 | 2019 MLS Match Recap

A pair of Sporting Kansas City mistakes at the back were the difference Saturday night at Children's Mercy Park, as Western Conference foe FC Dallas came on the road to secure a 2-0 win.

The first lapse arose in the 37th minute, as Seth Sinovic and Gianluca Busio failed to connect on a pass in their defensive third. Dallas winger Michael Barrios picked up the scraps, squaring across for striker Dominique Badji to finish from 12 yards out.

Dallas doubled their advantage come the 57th minute via Jesus Ferreira, giving the youngster six goals on the year. He made quick work of SKC center backs Matt Besler and Botond Barath, then calmly finished past Tim Melia at close range.

For all their possession, SKC failed to register a shot on target until the 88th minute, with 10 off target and six blocked. Gerso and Johnny Russell were particularly active out wide, as was substitute striker Krisztian Nemeth, but the final product lacked all evening. Nemeth came closest in the 95th minute, though Jesse Gonzalez tipped over the crossbar.

The game was played amid a heat wave, which prompted water breaks in each half and heavy legs throughout.

Three Things

BIG PICTURE:
SKC have now dropped to 4-4-3 at home and saw their two-game winning stretch snapped, pausing hopes of climbing further towards a Western Conference playoff spot. Even more worrisome is they’ve now conceded 22 goals at home. The match also marked a second straight win at SKC for Dallas, with the other being a 3-2 result
back on July 28, 2018
. They're hovering around that No. 7 spot in the West.

  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: The opening goal from Badji was deflating for SKC, as they largely bossed the first 30-plus minutes before facing a 1-0 deficit. That gave Dallas a boost they never relinquished in what felt like a six-pointer.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: With U.S. U-20 international Paxton Pomykal out with a “lower body strain,” per Dallas, Jesus Ferreira dropped into midfield and impressed throughout. Normally a striker, he put in serious work on both sides of the ball in front of Brandon Servania and Bryan Acosta
