Chasing Josef: Carlos Vela on pace to challenge all-time single-season mark

Carlos Vela's scintillating 2019 campaign rolls on, with the LAFC superstar bagging another two goals in his team's 3-2 derby loss against the LA Galaxy in Week 20, maintaining his incredible scoring pace in league play thus far.

Vela now has a total of 21 goals in 20 matches this season, a total that has him on track to challenge the single-season record of 31 goals set by Atlanta United's Josef Martinez in 2018.

Vela has now pushed further ahead of Martinez's goals-per-90 minutes average when compared to the Venezuelan international's first 20 matches in 2018:

Player Goals Minutes Goals per 90
2019 Vela (20 matches) 21 1789 1.06
2018 Martinez (20 matches) 18 1674 0.97

With a five-goal lead in the race for the 2019 Golden Boot presented by Audi, and a six-goal lead over 2019 Josef, Vela is well on his way to claiming that honor as we plunge into the back half of the 34-game season.

But there's still a lot of work to do – another 11 goals, to be exact – before Vela can unseat Martinez for the all-time single-season mark.
