Carlos Vela's scintillating 2019 campaign rolls on, with the LAFC superstar bagging another two goals in his team's 3-2 derby loss against the LA Galaxy in Week 20, maintaining his incredible scoring pace in league play thus far.
Carlos Vela of #LAFC has scored his league-leading 20th goal of the season. He is the fourth player in #MLS history to record at least 20 goals and 10 assists in the same season (now also with 12 assists for the year, tied for the league lead).#LAvLAFC— MLS Communications (@MLS_PR) July 20, 2019
Vela has now pushed further ahead of Martinez's goals-per-90 minutes average when compared to the Venezuelan international's first 20 matches in 2018:
|Player||Goals||Minutes||Goals per 90|
|2019 Vela (20 matches)||21||1789||1.06|
|2018 Martinez (20 matches)||18||1674||0.97|
With a five-goal lead in the race for the 2019 Golden Boot presented by Audi, and a six-goal lead over 2019 Josef, Vela is well on his way to claiming that honor as we plunge into the back half of the 34-game season.
But there's still a lot of work to do – another 11 goals, to be exact – before Vela can unseat Martinez for the all-time single-season mark.
