Los Angeles Football Club Forward Carlos Vela Voted MLS Player of the Week

– Los Angeles Football Club forward Carlos Vela was voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Week for the second week of the 2019 MLS season.
Vela helped LAFC to a dominant 4-1 victory over the Portland Timbers at Banc of California Stadium on Sunday with a goal and two assists. LAFC is perfect on the season with a 2-0-0 overall record and six points secured, tied for first in the league.
The Mexico National Team star assisted on LAFC’s first goal in the 14

minute, sending a corner kick into the box for a Mark-Anthony Kaye header to give the club a 1-0 advantage (

). Vela notched his second assist of the night in the 65

minute to give LAFC a 3-1 lead with a perfectly placed pass from the right side of the box to Adama Diomande directly in front of goal (

Vela capped his standout night with a goal in the 68

minute to push the advantage to 4-1. Diomande found a streaking Vela with a pass to the right side of the box and the FIFA World Cup veteran finished the play with a left-footed shot for his first goal of the season (

LAFC returns to action on Sunday, March 17 when facing New York City FC at Yankee Stadium (3 p.m. ET., FS1 / FOX Deportes / FOX Sports Go).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
