MARIETTA, Ga. -- With Pity Martinez now in tow after another big transfer move by Atlanta United, technical director Carlos Bocanegra and president Darren Eales have another issue: How to become roster compliant by the deadline. Martinez becomes Atlanta’s fourth Designated Player on the books, so something has to give.
Speaking at Martinez’s introductory press conference Friday, Bocanegra remained mum on how events were unfolding with regards to moving on either Miguel Almiron or Ezequiel Barco — the two most logical options, perhaps, considering Josef Martinez’s recent contract extension.
“We've got until March 1, and there's many different things on the table,” said Bocanegra. “Obviously we've got to be roster compliant by then, but internally we'll figure stuff out.”
The Five Stripes are seemingly running out of time to sell Almiron, with less than a week remaining until the English transfer window slams shut. MLSsoccer.com's Sam Stejskal reported the club would prefer to sell Almiron than send Barco on loan. With Deadline Day abroad approaching, there is sure to be plenty of work taking place behind the scenes.
While Atlanta wrestles with this issue in the short term, the topic of Designated Players and MLS budget rules in general are becoming an increasingly popular talking point nationally. Bocanegra mulled possible changes on the horizon.
“I think the league is evolving. It's normal. You see the academy systems come in, you see the introduction of TAM, you see where the league is going and evolving,” said Bocanegra. “I think with the next CBA, there will be some changes but I'm not sure what exactly they'll be. But I think it's a good thing that the league is evolving and that these questions are being asked.”
When asked what players in the Argentine Superliga think of MLS, Martinez said nothing but good things. Continued success for those highly-touted imports could lend urgency to changing roster rules in the future to keep those players coming to the league.
“I think the league has grown a lot. It's very competitive, and that's why you're seeing players that are talented enough to go to Europe choosing to come here,” said Martinez. “They want to be here. I want to help the league and help Atlanta United and it's a privilege to come here.”
