Torrent on replacing David Villa at NYCFC: "It's almost impossible"

Dome Torrent is about to begin his first full season as the head coach of NYCFC, and the manager knows all eyes are on how the roster will look in 2019.

Gone is the club's first signing David Villa, a former MLS MVP who was pretty much the best case scenario for a Designated Player moving to a debutant MLS team. Torrent told AS.com this week that replacing Villa is "almost impossible," and suggested the club may be better suited trying to sign more than one player to fill the leadership and scoring load of the Spaniard.

"Maybe David is not replaced with another David, but with a stronger team," he said. "Sign two or three players who can provide the goals that David gave us and a little more."

Torrent also noted the complications relating to the schedule, with MLS running through the calendar year, making signing another big player a challenge with most leagues abroad ending in the summer.

Still, he believes NYCFC has the "necessities more or less covered" on the roster, with the team primarily looking to add "interesting players."

As for who those interesting players could be, Torrent was mum.

NYCFC open the 2019 MLS regular season on March 2 on the road against Orlando City SC.
