Darren Eales says Atlanta United will have new manager by Jan. 14

Atlanta United have targeted a date for having their new head coach in place.

ATLUTD president Darren Eales told 92.9 The Game that the club will have Tata Martino's successor up and running by Jan. 14. Why that day? It's not arbitrary: It's when Atlanta begin preseason.

“We start the preseason the 14th of January, so for us we want to have a coach in place by the first day of preseason training," Eales told hosts Carl Dukes and Mike Bell. "It’s important to have some experience, but there’s always a chance to find an up-and-comer, but look we’ve already built a base and team with a style so we need someone who’s not too proud to rip it all up because of pride.”

Boca Juniors manager and former Columbus Crew SC star Guillermo Barros Schelotto has long been the rumored frontrunner, and Eales was reportedly in Argentina before MLS Cup to negotiate with GBS. Gabriel Milito is also reportedly in the mix.

Atlanta have been busy since winning MLS Cup on Saturday. River Plate star Pity Martinez said Sunday that he will be joining ATL and the club traded Greg Garza to FC Cincinnati on Tuesday
