Portland Timbers Midfielder Sebastián Blanco Voted Alcatel MLS Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Tuesday, September 11, 2018) – Portland Timbers midfielder Sebastián Blanco was voted the Alcatel Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 28th week of the 2018 MLS season.
Blanco assisted on both Portland goals during a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday at Providence Park. On the season, Blanco has six goals to go along with eight assists, the latter tying an MLS career high and ranking second on the club this season. Portland is currently tied for fourth place in the Western Conference standings with 44 points (12-7-8 overall record) and maintains a 7-2-2 record in matches where Blanco either scores or registers an assist.
With the match scoreless moments before the half, Blanco set up Jeremy Ebobisse with a brilliant individual effort. Blanco dribbled through a failed tackle by a Rapids defender and sent a pass directly in front of goal to an uncovered Ebobisse, who finished with a sliding left-footed shot to give Portland a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute (Watch Assist).
The Argentine flexed his distribution skills yet again when setting up Diego Valeri’s goal to push Portland ahead 2-0 in the 65th minute. Blanco dribbled down the left flank from near midfield and found himself uncovered in the box before sending a fast-paced cross toward goal for a powerful headed finish by Valeri to cap a strong performance by the Timbers (Watch Assist).
Portland returns to action on Saturday, September 15 when facing the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN+).
