Colorado Rapids believe they have what it takes to knock off Toronto FC

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. ā€“ After punching their ticket to the Concacaf Champions League final earlier this week, Toronto FC have further cemented their reputation as the best MLS team ever.

But entering Saturdayā€™s home match with the Reds (3 pm ET | ESPN+; CTV, TSN1/4 in Canada), the Colorado Rapids arenā€™t shying away from the challenge.

ā€œHaving played against them a couple of times with players new to the league, we feel like we know what their strengths and weaknesses are,ā€ Rapids center back Tommy Smith told MLSsoccer.com this week. ā€œTo be fair to them, theyā€™ll know us as well. It will be a good contest.ā€

It will mark the third meeting between the two sides in the past two months, following the Rapidsā€™ CCL Round of 16 series defeat in February. In the second game of that series, the Rapids accomplished what neither top Liga MX sides Tigres nor Club AmĆ©rica could ā€“ a clean sheet at BMO Field. Combined with incremental improvement in each of their matches in 2018, itā€™s given Colorado confidence heading into this weekend.

ā€œObviously, weā€™re another few weeks down the line with everybody getting used to the new system,ā€ Smith explained. ā€œWe feel like weā€™re a much better team than we were when we played those Champions League games and, especially compared to when we last played them at home.ā€

ā€œIf people are actually watching our team, youā€™ll see that we have a new team thatā€™s progressing,ā€ added Rapids head coach Anthony Hudson. ā€œWeā€™re now seeing an identity with our team. Weā€™re starting to see a certain work ethic, a certain style of football.ā€

While confident, Colorado is by no means throwing caution to the wind. Despite Torontoā€™s current injuries and fatigue following Tuesdayā€™s 1-1 draw with AmĆ©rica at the Estadio Azteca, Hudson acknowledged that Greg Vanneyā€™s side still has the quality to be dangerous.

ā€œIf you were to see the board in our coachesā€™ office and see the squad they have and the rotations theyā€™ve had in all their MLS and Champions League games, and the quality of their squad, you can see they can rotate quite easily and the level in their team doesnā€™t drop,ā€ said Hudson.

Despite the fanfare surrounding the visitors, and his recent comments regarding his team being ā€œwritten offā€ early in the season, Hudson is adamant that Saturday isnā€™t a ā€œstatement game.ā€

ā€œWhat weā€™re going to do is not going to be based on one game or one result,ā€ he said. ā€œWeā€™re building something, so that wonā€™t be defined on the Toronto performance. Weā€™re certainly confident and we believe in our season and the future of what weā€™re doing.ā€
