San Jose Earthquakes 3, Portland Timbers 0 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

The San Jose Earthquakes jumped on the Portland Timbers early and didn't let up until they had secured a 3-0 victory Saturday night at Avaya Stadium.

Chris Wondolowski had a hand in all three goals for the home side. In the 7th minute, he set up Jahmir Hyka to finish from close range, and then was on the receiving end of two Florian Jungwirth assists. Wondolowski doubled the lead by curling a shot from just inside the box around a diving Jeff Attinella at the half-hour mark, and then put the game away by chipping Attinella shortly after halftime.

Three Things

  1. CAN'T STOP WONDO: Chris Wondolowski has been a thorn in Portland's side for some time. He has now scored 10 goals all-time against the Timbers (in 13 games), which are more than any other player has scored against Portland. For the season, he has four goals and five assists (two off his career single-season high, set in 2012), and has been involved in nine of San Jose's 12 goals through 10 games.
  2. SET THE TONE EARLY: Back home after three straight road games, the Quakes were on the front foot from the opening whistle. Yes, the goal came early, but the Quakes didn't let up. They outshot Portland 11-5 in the first half, putting 7 on target to Portland's lone attempt. By the time they put their 8th shot on goal - 10 minutes into the second half - they were comfortably up 3-0.
  3. JUNGWIRTH ON BOTH ENDS: Centerback Florian Jungwirth has been a difference-maker for the Quakes early this year, and he was again instrumental on this night. Not only did he help the Quakes post their second consecutive shutout, but he continued his well-timed runs into the attack, setting up both of Wondolowski's goals a week after getting the game-winning goal in Minnesota.
