New York City FC midfielder Frank Lampard won Etihad Airways MLS Player of the Month for July, the league announced on Thursday.
The English Designated Player put the Yankee Stadium boo-birds firmly behind him last month, scoring six goals and adding one assist to keep NYCFC atop the Eastern Conference table. Lampard started all six of NYCFC’s matches in July, helping the club compile a 4-2-0 record.
Lampard capped his excellent month with a historic performance last weekend, scoring the first hat trick in NYCFC history to power the club to a 5-1 win against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday. He won Player of the Week for Week 21 for his efforts.
He won the monthly award with 32.66 percent of the vote, beating out Portland Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson (27.4 percent), Orlando City’s Kevin Molino (20.75 percent), Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco (12.56 percent) and LA Galaxy’s Jelle Van Damme (6.63 percent).
The five Etihad Airways Player of the Month finalists are selected at the end of each month by the MLSsoccer.com editorial staff. The winner is then determined by a fan vote.
