They did so by agreeing to terms with third-round SuperDraft selection Kip Colvey.
The 21-year-old defender was a four-year starter for the Cal Poly Mustangs, appearing in 74 matches, all but two of them starts, and tallied four goals with nine assists.
“He had a very good preseason and played well against all different levels of competition we faced,” said Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear in a statement. “He showed his versatility by playing on both sides of the field and deserves to be here.”
Internationally, Colvey has represented the New Zealand U-17s and U-23s. He helped the Kiwis reach the Round of 16 at the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup and also appeared for the U-23s at the 2015 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Papua New Guinea.
“Kip is very versatile, capable of playing on the left or right side,” said Earthquakes general manager John Doyle. “He possesses good technical skill and we’re looking forward to what he can do.”
