American Exports: Brek Shea makes "fantastic" debut for Barnsley

AMSTERDAM -- Newly acquired loanee Brek Shea barely made it onto the team sheet for Barnsley but made an encouraging debut in a 1-1 draw at Birmingham City on Wednesday.

The US international, who joined the Championship side on a 28-day loan from Stoke City earlier in the day, started and went 75 minutes on the day.

Wearing the No. 33 jersey, he showed some of the menace he's been known for in the past, put two of four shots on frame, drawing a good save just past the half hour, and curling in a cross that deserved a better finish just before the halftime break.

"Brek Shea came into the team and had a fantastic 70 minutes or so," Tykes manager Danny WIlson said after the match. "He'll be a big threat for us going forward. . . . We only got his name on the team sheet at two minutes to two!"

Despite the positive result, Barnsley remain at the bottom of the Championship table, five points from the safety zone. They are winless in their last six matches.

The Tykes are in action again on Saturday in an FA Cup 3rd round match at home to Coventry City. They then return to league action on Saturday, January 11, away to Charlton Athletic.

Shea's loan would then finish up at home against Blackpool (Jan 18), away to Wigan Athletic (Jan 25), and at home against Blackburn Rovers (Jan 28).
