Austin FC's Jon Gallagher: Rice, Rooney & an All-Star dream realized
WASHINGTON – With MLS All-Star Week taking over downtown Washington, D.C., you’re seldom more than a stone’s throw away from someone of stature or influence in the soccer world.
Gallagher joined Austin FC ahead of the Club's inaugural season, and made history by becoming the first-ever MLS goal-scorer at Q2 Stadium, netting the opener in Austin's 4-1 win over Portland Timbers on July 1, 2021.
Over the course of his time with the Verde & Black, Gallagher's versatility has made him a vital part of the team, with his skillset seeing him play a number of positions including winger and fullback. His contributions at both ends of the pitch earned him a new contract in November 2022, keeping him with the Verde & Black through the end of the 2026 season with an additional option for 2027.
Prior to joining Austin, Gallagher was part of the 2018 MLS Cup winning roster during his tenure in Atlanta from 2018 to 2020, making 16 regular season appearances (11 starts) and scoring four (4) goals. He also spent time with Atlanta United 2 and on loan with Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen FC, where he earned 31 caps and contributed one (1) goal and three (3) assists across all competitions in 2019-20. Gallagher played and started all six (6) Europa League Qualifying matches for Aberdeen FC in 2019, where he produced three (3) assists.
The Dundalk, Ireland native was drafted out of Notre Dame after a decorated collegiate career, tallying 39 goals and 15 assists in 84 matches played, earning two All-ACC selections and a mention in the College Soccer News All-America Second Team and NSCAA All-South Region Second Team (2016). Aside from Ireland, the U.S., and Scotland, Gallagher also lived in Jamaica and Singapore during his childhood.
