Transfer Watch: Fiorentina forward Mario Gomez linked by Italian press to both New York MLS teams

Mario Gomez - Transfer Watch

The rumor mill is heating up as summer approaches, and the latest speculation from the Italian press has Fiorentina forward Mario Gomez linked with a move to either the New York Red Bulls or New York City FC.

Multiple outlets, including Goal Italia, have attributed the reports to Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport.

Gomez, 30, joined Fiorentina in 2013 after an extensive career in his native Germany with Stuttgart and then Bayern Munich, where he captured Bundesliga titles with each team and was part of the Bayern squad that won the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League.

The report comes despite the fact that Gomez's agent has stressed that Gomez wants to stay in Florence, and that Fiorentina have not sent any signals about wanting to move their big-money striker on after a tough season in which he scored four goals in 20 league games. He was, however, the co-top scorer in the 2014-15 Coppa Italia with four goals, helping Fiorentina to the semifinals of both that competition and the UEFA Europa League.

In addition to his club exploits, Gomez has been capped 60 times for the German national team, with 25 international goals to his name. He played for Die Mannschaft in the 2010 World Cup, as well as the 2008 and 2012 European Championships, but was not a part of the 2014 World Cup-winning squad.
