New York Red Bulls sign striker, local product Mike Grella after successful trial period

It took six years longer than many expected, but Mike Grella is finally an MLS player.

The New York Red Bulls signed the striker from Glen Cove, New York on Tuesday, pending a physical, after a successful trial period during the club's preseason training activities.

“Mike has come into camp and earned this contract,” said Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch in a statement. “He showed up and has worked hard since day one. His form has been great, but his attitude and work ethic have been even better.”

A 2004 NSCAA National High School Player of the Year turned prolific NCAA scorer at Duke University, Grella, 28, was one of the highest-rated prospects in the country when he turned pro in 2009 and was selected by Toronto FC with the 34th pick of that year's SuperDraft.

But with an Italian passport in hand due to his family heritage, he pursued European opportunities instead. Grella signed with Leeds United and spent several years at the English club, during which time the Whites gained promotion to the Championship (second division).

Grella made 40 appearances and scored five goals at Leeds but was unable to lock down a consistent starting role. He subsequently bounced around England's lower divisions and spent time at Danish SuperLiga side Viborg before returning stateside to join the Carolina RailHawks of the NASL in April 2014.

Now, after impressing over several weeks with RBNY, he's earned a place with his hometown club.

“We’re very pleased with what Mike has shown us,” said Red Bulls sporting director Ali Curtis. “He embodies attributes we’re looking for in terms of character and effort. We feel that he will add value to our roster and be a positive presence for our club on the field and in the locker room.”
