MLS Disciplinary Committee suspends DC United's Eddie Johnson, Portland Timbers' Alvas Powell

The MLS Disciplinary Committee has suspended D.C. United forward Eddie Johnson one game and fined him an undisclosed amount for his reckless challenge in the 60th minute (video above) Saturday against Montreal Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

Through the MLS Players Union, Johnson submitted an appeal, and the committee’s decision was upheld by an independent review panel. The committee also fined Johnson an undisclosed amount for his actions towards Impact defender Wandrille Lefevre that violated the league’s policy regarding hands to the face/head of an opponent in the 60th minute of Saturday's game (video above).

The committee also suspended Portland Timbers defender Alvas Powell one additional game for serious foul play that endangered the safety of an opponent against Columbus Crew defender Chad Barson in the 34th minute of Saturday's game. Powell received a red card on the play (VIDEO).

Also from that game, the committee determined the Crew violated the league’s mass confrontation policy in the 85th minute (VIDEO) following Gaston Fernandez's equalizer in the 3-3 draw. The Crew and head coach Gregg Berhalter will both receive fines as this is the club’s second infraction this year.
