LIGA MX announces first 14 LIGA MX All-Stars that will play against MLS in the 2022 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target

Gignac, Camilo Vargas and Ángel Mena among stars named for LIGA MX All-Star Team

NEW YORK (June 9, 2022) – Today LIGA MX unveiled the names of the first 14 players who will participate as part of the LIGA MX All-Star Team. The stars from across the Mexican league will face the best of Major League Soccer in the 2022 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target on Wednesday, August 10 at Allianz Field in Minnesota (8:30 p.m. ET / U.S.: ESPN, Univision; Mexico and Latin America: ESPN; Canada: TSN, TVA).

LIGA MX’s first 14 All-Stars players are the nominees for the Balón de Oro awards within the categories of Best Goalkeeper, Central Defender, Full-Back, Defensive Midfielder, Attacking Midfielder, Forward and Rookie. Balón de Oro is LIGA MX’s ceremony to honor the league’s best following the Apertura and Clausura seasons.

The complete LIGA MX roster will be unveiled after the Balón de Oro ceremony on June 25 when the Head Coach of the Season award recipient is announced. The nominees for this award are Diego Cocca from Atlas FC and Guillermo Almada from C.F. Pachuca. The winner will select the remaining players of the LIGA MX All-Star squad to be announced at a later date, with the exception of the 26th player who will be selected by LIGA MX Executive President Mikel Arriola.

LIGA MX is putting forth the league’s best-of-the-best as they prepare for the rematch of the 2021 All-Star Game when the MLS All-Stars tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and defeated LIGA MX in penalty kicks. The current LIGA MX lineup features Tigres UANL’s all-time leading scorer and the Liga MX 2022 Clausura's Golden Boot recipient, Andre-Pierre Gignac. The iconic French striker, who contributed 14 goals during the 2021/2022 season, will be joined by back-to-back Liga MX champions, goalkeeper Camilo Vargas and midfielder Aldo Rocha from Atlas FC. In addition to Vargas, the LIGA MX 2022 Clausura MVP, and Rocha, Angel Mena from Club Léon will be an added threat for the MLS defense.

The match will air live on ESPN and Univision in the U.S., TSN and TVA Sports in Canada, on ESPN throughout Mexico and Latin America, with kickoff slated for 8:30 p.m. ET.
