Diego Valeri becomes third player in MLS history to record 80 goals and 80 assists

Diego Valeri - Portland Timbers - August 11, 2020

Another milestone for an MLS legend.

Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri became the third player in MLS history to record 80 goals and 80 assists in regular season matches, following Landon Donovan and Jaime Moreno. Valeri has 80 goals and 83 assists across seven-and-a-half seasons with the Timbers in MLS so far. And he doesn't look like slowing down.

Below is Valeri's 80th career MLS goal, fired home at Providence Park on Wednesday night in the Timbers' somewhat controversial3-2 loss to the LA Galaxy.

Valeri, 34, has four goals and two assists in eight regular-season appearances this year and is averaging a goal contribution every 87 minutes. The Landon Donovan 2017 MLS MVP award winner has led the Timbers to MLS Cup twice, lifting the trophy in 2015, as well as winning the MLS is Back Tournament last month.

Valeri is 18th all-time in goals scored in MLS history and 11th in assists. Depending on how much longer he plays, he could well enter the 100/100 club with the form he's carrying into his mid-30's.

The Argentine arrived in Portland from Club Lanus in Argentina in 2013 and has been the face of the Timbers franchise for almost their entire MLS existence. A fan favorite, Valeri's name will go down in Timbers and MLS lore whenever he hangs up his boots.

But those boots still have plenty more goals and assists in them. Valeri and the Timbers are next in action on Sunday against the Seattle Sounders.
