The organization that oversees the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the neighboring Sports Arena has submitted an environmental impact report that examines the possibility of knocking down the arena and building either an amphitheater or a 22,000-seat Major League Soccer stadium.
Amid rumors that Chivas USA are eager to one day leave the Home Depot Center, which they share with the LA Galaxy, could this new downtown stadium be a future home field for the Goats?
"We are looking for our own place, but we're at the Home Depot Center for the next three years,” Chivas USA press officer David Lindholm told MLSsoccer.com. “The EIR didn't mention anything about us, and we don't comment on speculation or rumors.”
Jonathan Lee, the director of marketing and events at the LA Memorial Coliseum and Sports Arena, said the Coliseum Commission’s report was the very beginning of a long process.
"At this point, the stadium is more theoretical than anything," Lee said. "All the EIR does is clear the way for a potential stadium if that was the way to go."
The public has 45 days to comment on the report, a period that ends Dec. 30.
According to Lee, assuming there aren't any major complaints from the general public – and he doesn't expect there to be any – the Commission will begin exploring its options at the end of the year.
