Patrick Weah, the nephew of Liberian president and former soccer great George Weah and cousin of US national teamer Tim Weah, has earned a call into Minnesota United's first-team training, according to the St. Paul Pioneer-Press.
A standout for the Loons' U-17 academy squad, he participated with the first team during Minnesota's preseason and is in training again as they prepare to face the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday (8 pm ET | MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in the US and on DAZN in Canada).
The 16-year-old has not signed a Homegrown Player contract so far. If he does, he would be the Loons' second Homegrown signing, following goalkeeper Fred Emmings, who finalized a deal in January.
George Weah is arguably the greatest player in Liberia's history, with a career that included stops at Monaco, Paris St. Germain, AC Milan, Chelsea and Manchester City. He is currently the president of the West African nation, having been elected in 2018.
