Portland Timbers re-sign goalkeeper Steve Clark

Steve Clark - Portland Timbers - Close up

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Re-signing

Steve Clark enjoyed a career resurgence after joining the Portland Timbers, and the goalkeeper is set to stay there for the foreseeable future.

The Timbers announced on Friday they have signed Clark to a new contract ahead of the 2020 season.

“Re-signing Steve was a priority for the club this offseason and we are thrilled to have him back after his tremendous 2019 season where he showcased his qualities,” said Timbers general manager and president of soccer Gavin Wilkinson in a team statement. “This new contract presents Steve with a well-deserved opportunity to continue to demonstrate his ability in MLS.”

Clark, 33, was the starter for most of the season for Portland, making 24 MLS regular-season appearances and starting in the club's Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs game. He joined the Timbers during the 2018 season, after being claimed off waivers from D.C. United, and previously enjoyed three seasons as a starter at Columbus Crew SC. The Michigan native began his professional career in Denmark, for Honefoss and Horsens.

Clark looks likely to be part of a pitched battle for the Timbers' No. 1 slot in goal in 2020, with Jeff Attinella and 2019 signing Aljaz Ivacic both expected back from injury-ravaged years. Portland will kick off the 2020 regular season on March 1 at home against Minnesota United FC.
