Philadelphia Union assistant coach departs for similar role in Bundesliga

The Philadelphia Union will be seeing a key member of their coaching staff depart for an opportunity in the Bundesliga.

The Union announced on Monday that assistant coach Dick Schreuder will be taking an assistant role at Hoffenheim, alongside his brother Alfred, who was recently named the head coach of the German club.

“This morning, 1899 Hoffenheim of the German Bundesliga announced the addition of Dick Schreuder as an assistant coach," Union sporting director Ernst Tanner explained in an article on the Union website. "Dick has the tremendous opportunity to coach alongside his brother, Alfred, who was recently named Hoffenheim’s head coach. All of us at the Philadelphia Union are thrilled for Dick and his family.

"This was an easy decision for us to support Dick as he makes this move to join his brother, and we would like to thank him for his service and hard work during his time with our club.

“As part of our arrangement with Hoffenheim, Dick will remain with the Union through our June 8 game vs. the New York Red Bulls, and we will compensate for his departure internally until the end of the season.”

Schreuder joined Jim Curtin's staff ahead of the 2018 season. The Dutch midfielder played professionally in his native country and England during his playing days, before moving into management a little over a decade ago. He managed lower-division teams in the Netherlands and England before coming to MLS.

Hoffenheim finished in 9th place in the recently-concluded Bundesliga season. The club, one of the biggest perennial overachievers in the division, hired Alfred Schreuder after the successful tenure of Julian Nagelsmann, who will take over at RB Leipzig next season.
